Cambridge Associates Overview:
Cambridge Associates was formed in 1973 to provide investment services to a group of major university endowments in the United States. The firm grew out of a project undertaken for Harvard University by our two founders, James Bailey and Hunter Lewis, who were asked to conduct a comprehensive review of Harvard s approach to the investment of its endowment. Upon completion of the project, Jim and Hunter were hired by 11 other major university endowments to provide asset class research and recommendations based on their initial findings. These institutions included Amherst College, California Institute of Technology, Dartmouth College, Johns Hopkins University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Notre Dame, Princeton University, University of Southern California, Stanford University, Wesleyan University, and Yale University. We are proud to say that today, more than 40 years later, these 12 institutions continue to be clients of the firm.
Today, we provide investment consulting, financial planning and proprietary capital markets research to over 1,000 clients across 4 continents and 36 countries, including charities, colleges and universities, foundations, medical institutions, museums, other endowed nonprofit institutions, families, pension funds, and sovereign wealth funds. A short and imperfect sampling of the institutions we serve includes University of Cambridge, Oxford University Endowment Management, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, The Hong Kong Jockey Club, Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Brookings Institution, International Monetary Fund, Norges Bank Investment Management, etc. Cambridge Associates clients represent over US$4.3 trillion in assets, with investments in all asset categories, including equities, bonds, real estate, venture capital, hedge funds, leveraged buyout funds, oil and gas partnerships, and many other types of investments. In China, we work with some of the country s largest and most sophisticated investors and continue to grow our client base here.
Cambridge Associates has a staff of more than 1,100 professionals, including 200 Investment Directors and 150 Investment Associates in our Global Investment Services department, based in eight offices located in Arlington, Beijing, Boston, Dallas, London, Menlo Park, Singapore and Sydney. We select our employees with great attention to realize their potential in becoming valuable members of a collegial, intelligent and hard-working team. Due to continued growth we are currently seeking to add a full-time Investment Associate in our Beijing office. We are currently recruiting for individuals who are either recent graduates or with up to 2 years of work experience. The new hire is expected to start work in mid-2015, with an opportunity to receive comprehensive training in one of our international offices after joining.
Investment Associate:
Investment Associates (IAs) work closely with members of the investment staff in providing investment and capital markets research, analysis, and advice to our clients. Responsibilities include gathering and analyzing historical asset allocation, spending, and performance data; evaluating financial histories; analyzing investment managers portfolios; preparing exhibits and other presentation documentation; and answering client questions and requests. IAs often attend client and investment manager meetings.
Each IA is responsible for a number of different clients and handles several projects at once. Every IA is responsible for arranging his or her schedule and priorities in order to meet deadlines; however, there is a strong tradition of teamwork and cooperation among members of the investment associate staff to help manage the workload. Although the position involves quantitative analysis, there is also a strong qualitative component as IAs work to describe market conditions and relay investment recommendations to clients in written reports.
In order to better understand the IA position, the following list provides examples of the type of activities undertaken by an IA on a daily basis. Obviously, this is not an exhaustive list and as an IA progresses up the learning curve, more opportunities and detailed projects present themselves:
Conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses within client teams to develop recommendations for institutional portfolios;
Analyze and graphically illustrate the effects of investment returns, spending, and inflation on the value of an endowment;
Use quantitative models to examine the risk-return relationship of various asset classes;
Meet with investment directors to outline the analyses and presentation materials required for upcoming clients investment committee meetings;
Analyze portfolio managers equity, fixed income, hedge or private equity portfolios; prepare written summaries of investments results; evaluate investment managers qualitatively and quantitatively and analyze their function within client portfolios;
Gather exhibits for use in the final meeting materials by using several in-house databases; coordinate the creation of these meeting materials with the investment, administrative and production staff ;
Interact with clients and investment managers to complete requests; attend investment manager presentations or local client meetings;
Assist peers with projects when workload permits and attend IA team meetings to discuss operational issues.
Given the stage of development of our Beijing office, the scope of work for an IA here may be broader than the typical IA role in our other offices as described above. Other activities an IA may perform here include conducting desktop research for business development efforts, preparing presentation materials for marketing meetings and attending these meetings if appropriate, participating in investment manager meetings or due diligence projects and producing written reports afterwards, and so on. Flexibility with regard to daily activities is an important consideration.

We offer an environment where our employees can thrive in a non-hierarchical structure. Moreover, we are a truly global firm with all of our global offices well-integrated into each other, which often result in opportunities for IAs to work on cross-office teams and projects and therefore gain global perspectives and exposure.
At Beijing office, IAs sit ten feet away from the Investment Directors and constantly benefit from their expertise in various asset classes and from their mentorship that helps IAs grow as a professional. Opportunities to interact with international offices are also abundant either through client projects or through IA self-organized teams.
