An exciting opportunity exists at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, for a dynamic person to join and give direction to this fast-growing section of the Department of Modern Foreign Languages.

All foreign language programmes are based on an intercultural and communicative approach and are designed to provide a thorough competence in the spoken and written form of the target language.

Applicants are requested to submit, apart from a CV, a concise exposition of their expertise, their view of the future of Mandarin teaching and their envisaged role and contribution to such a future.

Duties:

? Teaching Mandarin language, culture and literature at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level;

? Developing course material and assessment opportunities for academic and short courses;

? Performing administrative and organisational functions as required by the Department;

? Student development;

? Community involvement;

? Liaising with cultural representatives of countries where Mandarin is spoken;

? Liaising with the Centre for Chinese Studies.

Requirements:

? An appropriate academic qualification in teaching Mandarin as a foreign language;

? Experience in teaching Mandarin as a foreign language;

? Proven ability to develop new course material;

? Ability to function within a team;

? Ability to communicate fluently in Mandarin and English.

Recommendations:

? Master’s degree or equivalent;

? Experience in teaching Mandarin as a foreign language in a foreign context;

? Mandarin mother tongue speaker;

? Experience in using technology for language learning;

? Cultural skills such as poetry, calligraphy or music;

? Experience in Chinese business culture.
